Digital Museums: Let’s Stop Copying Real-World Rules
Let’s discuss the two most common pitfalls when bringing 3D spaces into browsers.
First, Developers often shove in-game mechanics where they have no business being. Cue the obsession with avatars wandering through virtual spaces. Why, exactly, do we need an avatar? The focus should be on the environment, not some pointless digital stand-in for the user.
And then there’s the navigation. On a desktop, WASD and mouse controls might be second nature for gamers, but for everyone else? Confusing. On mobile? Absolute torture. Endless tapping on the screen makes even the simplest movement an exercise in frustration. 😠
The “solution” often involves slapping on more buttons, arrows, and sliders, resulting in interfaces that look like the cockpit of a spaceship. All of this is to replicate walking in the real world. But why? This is a virtual world with its own rules! Why copy the clichés of reality?
Users want effortless movement — intuitive and seamless, not some awkward mimicry of real-world walking.
Second, The obsession with replicating a 3D world often overshadows its purpose. Developers focus so much on the “how” of creating the virtual world that they forget the “why.”
The few who do create standalone apps quickly learn that no one is keen on downloading yet another app. That leaves us with browser-based solutions. And while browsers are fantastic tools, they were never meant to deliver high-quality 3D graphics. Sure, you can shoehorn in some basic visuals with WebGL, but let’s face it — comparing that to even a 20-year-old game is embarrassing.
This explains why most virtual museums you see are limited to flat art galleries. It’s easy to slap a 2D painting on a wall and call it a day. But try doing the same with a sculpture — or even the intricate frame of a painting — and you’ll see the cracks in this approach.
