Is This Art or Just Marketing?

3 March 2025, Art-Lab

Forward-thinking museums understand that their future lies online. That’s where their real — and most importantly, future — visitors are. Belvedere Museum has recognized this and launched the game Art Leap on Roblox.

A step in the right direction? Certainly. Sure. But there’s one problem — it has nothing to do with art. It’s marketing, advertising, promotion — yes. But not art.😥

Can this help boost a museum’s brand? Maybe. But can it foster a love for painting or sculpture? Unlikely.

And even from a marketing perspective, there are questions. Our colleagues proudly mention hundreds of thousands of visits, yet they forget (or don’t realize?) that millions are the norm in the world of Roblox. And the most popular games hit billions — Adopt Me! alone has over 38 billion visits.🤦‍♂️

So maybe it’s time to promote actual art online? To showcase its beauty. To explain its meaning. Instead of trying to lure young users in with basic games, they’ll likely forget in minutes.

What do you think? Should museums cater to the internet’s habits, or should they try to inspire a sense of the sublime and foster a true appreciation for art? Let’s discuss it!
